Ameridrives, Stromag, Svendborg Brakes, Twiflex and Warner Electric premier brands of Altra Industrial Motion Corp, have been brought together to deliver a single, global service for the wind market – promoted as Altra Renewables. Until now, each of the brands supported the sector with its own product expertise and know-how. Together, they are able to supply customers with complete powertrain solutions as well as offering a truly global maintenance, repair and aftermarket service.
Solutions providers for a variety of applications
Individually, each of the brands, which include Svendborg Brakes, Stromag, Twiflex and Warner Electric, are recognised as solutions providers for a variety of applications including wind turbines, tidal and ocean current turbines, solar panels and biomass furnaces. Each brand specialises within its own niche, with products including yaw brakes, rotor brakes, shaft locking devices, high-speed couplings, limit switches, actuators, hydraulic power units (HPUs) and soft braking control (SOBO iQ). By uniting the brands, Altra intends to combine their individual engineering, material sourcing, manufacturing and servicing expertise to help reduce the Cost of Energy (CoE) for operators.
Developing several turnkey technologies
Altra Renewables combines the expertise and capabilities of the premier brands to develop several turnkey technologies designed specifically for the market. For example, it has developed a cooling system for wind turbine nacelles that improves their efficiency and lowers CoE. This was achieved through a partnership between Svendborg Brakes and Stromag, whose distribution channel in Korea brought in the initial enquiry. Other bespoke technologies include a modular, hybrid yaw bearing that combines the benefits of roller and sliding bearings and an innovative yaw brake lifting and installation tool.
Manufacturing and engineering service centres
The Altra Renewables brands have manufacturing and engineering service centres located in Europe, Eastern and Southern Asia, North America and South America. This makes Altra the only manufacturer of complete power train solutions that is able to provide local support to OEMs as well as installation support and maintenance services to operators in even the most remote locations. Customers of any of the brands within Altra Renewables have access to the service and support of the complete division, including Svendborg Brakes 24/7 service solution for onshore and offshore applications.
