SEW-Eurodrive has added a new motor design to its standard DR motor series. The line start permanent magnet (LSPM) motor is an AC asynchronous motor featuring a squirrel-cage rotor containing additional permanent magnets. After asynchronous start-up, the motor synchronizes with the operating frequency and then runs in synchronous operation. The motor has been designed to exhibit zero rotor and excitation losses. It therefore combines the benefits of both the robust asynchronous motor and the low-loss synchronous motor. The four-pole line start permanent magnet motors are available in four shaft heights and eight sizes from 71S to 100L. The energy efficiency classes are each identified by a three-letter code. A further advantage is their size, which is two stages smaller than an equivalent series motor of the same power and within the same energy efficiency class. The LSPM motor can be powered directly from the power supply or a frequency inverter. It is compatible with the MOVITRAC B and MOVITRAC LTP-B control cabinet inverters, the decentralized MOVIFIT FC inverter, and the integrated MOVIMOT inverter. When connected to a frequency inverter, several other motors can also be connected for use as a group drive. The LSPM motor achieves its full energy-saving potential in continuous duty (in pump applications for instance).
