Schaeffler developed a high capacity cylindrical roller bearing for wind turbine gearboxes with a new cage design, resulting into higher load ratings and reduced friction. The compact sheet steel cage of these FAG cylindrical roller bearings leaves space for at least 1 additional rolling element in the bearing, thus increasing the load rating. Thanks to the lower friction the rating life of these bearings increased with 20%. The self-retaining cage simplifies bearing mounting since the rolling elements won't fall out even when the ring is removed. The cage comprises two cage rings lying one inside the other and joined together. The crosspieces of the inner cage guide the roller elements. The special geometrical shape of the cage pockets improves the flow of lubricants, which again reduces friction.
