The Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE) and Renewable Energy Solutions for the Mediterranean (RES4MED) launched a new strategic alliance that aims to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy, energy efficiency and distributed generation systems in the Mediterranean region. The Mediterranean Sustainable Energy Alliance (MedSEA) works with Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to catalyze sustainable energy investments in the North and South Mediterranean region through the integration of knowledge, technology and collaborative participation in solutions design.

The idea of creating a mutual, secure and sustainable energy future for the two shores of the Mediterranean is not new. Previous initiatives tackled the issue from a perspective of large-scale renewable energy plants aimed at trans-Mediterranean electricity export from South to North. These initiatives include the Mediterranean Solar Plan (MSP), Desertec Industrial Initiative (Dii), and Mediterranean Grid (MedGrid).
