Schaffner is further expanding its power quality product offering with new passive harmonic filters. The series FN3416 (50Hz) and FN3418 (60Hz) of the ECOsine Economy Line close the gap between full-performance filters and simple reactor-based solutions. They are particularly suitable for applications where available space is scarce and a cost-effective solution for harmonics mitigation is required. By utilizing the new passive harmonic filters, every standard AC or DC motor drive can be easily upgraded to a low harmonic drive. The filters offer a compact and more cost-effective alternative to the existing full-performance filters (THID <5%) and are particularly suitable for applications where harmonics mitigation to <10-15% is sufficient. Rectifier peak current and RMS input current are both reduced and a sine wave-like current is drawn from the grid. Lower electrical losses result in thermal unloading and allow for a better utilization of electrical system capacity. The required filter rating can be determined based upon the nominal power rating of an individual non-linear load or a group of such loads. Cabinet integration next to the motor drive has now become even easier with the substantially smaller filter package. Furthermore, the user-friendly filter concept allows for a quick installation, wiring and commissioning without the need of thorough system analysis and the involvement of specialists. The filters come in two versions: FN3416 filters for 380-500V, 50Hz grids, available with standard ratings from 4 to 160kW. And FN3418 filters for 380-480V, 60Hz grids, available with standard ratings from 5 to 250HP. All filters are UL-listed, CE-marked and RoHS compliant. They are particularly suitable for AC and DC motor drives, battery chargers and further power electronics with balanced 6-pulse input rectifiers.
