Developed specially for external attachment to a hydraulic cylinder, Temposonics Model MB stainless steel sensor, by MTS, can be used in such applications as steer-by-wire. Offering compact dimensions and an M14 x 1.5 thread, it can be mounted on double-acting steering cylinders. Integrated into the unit’s piston, the magnet transmits the position through a non-ferrous cylinder wall to the sensor. By using two externally mounted sensors, Model MB can function in a redundant capacity to meet stringent safety requirements. In addition to ease of external mounting on the double rod cylinder, it also suits direct screw installation in differential cylinder. In this type of installation, a ring magnet mounted on the piston slides over the sensor and marks the position. Thus, the sensor offers the flexibility of either being threaded into the cylinder or being attached on the outside. Additional sensor models allow embedding in the hydraulic cylinder, consequently permitting complete cylinder integration. Operating from a 12 V supply, the Model MB feature a measuring range of 72 - 250 mm. Utilizing a direct, analog voltage output, it is capable of providing a high-accuracy position feedback with a linearity of < ± 0.25 mm. Thanks to a good signal-to-noise ratio, the sensor also has a high-survivability rating with a 100 g single shock rating, as well as a vibration profile that meets the ISO 16750-3 specification. Furthermore, the protection type IP69K ensures that the electrical connection is dust and watertight.
